Why you need your Mac to screenshot Apple TV
Apple TV doesn’t have a built-in screenshot shortcut. Unlike your iPhone or Mac, there’s no button combination on the Siri Remote that captures the screen. To take a screenshot of anything on your Apple TV — the home screen, a game, app settings, or a tvOS interface — you need to connect it to your Mac and capture from there.
The good news: both methods covered below work wirelessly. No cables, no adapters. Your Mac and Apple TV just need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
What you need before you start
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Apple TV model | Apple TV HD (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K (any generation) |
| Mac | Any Mac running macOS Monterey 12 or later |
| Network | Both devices on the same Wi-Fi network |
| Software | QuickTime Player (pre-installed) or Xcode (free from the App Store) |
Apple TV 3rd generation and earlier do not support wireless pairing with QuickTime or Xcode, so these methods won’t work on older hardware.
Method 1: Screenshot Apple TV with QuickTime Player
QuickTime Player is the simplest approach. It’s already on your Mac and connects to Apple TV wirelessly.
Step 1: Pair your Apple TV with your Mac
- Make sure your Mac and Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi network
- Open QuickTime Player on your Mac
- Go to File > New Movie Recording
- Click the dropdown arrow next to the record button
- Under Camera, select your Apple TV from the list
- A four-digit pairing code appears on your Apple TV screen — enter it on your Mac when prompted
After pairing, your Apple TV screen appears in the QuickTime window. You only need to enter the pairing code once — your Mac remembers the connection for future sessions.
Step 2: Capture the screenshot
With the Apple TV display mirrored in QuickTime, use standard macOS screenshot shortcuts:
- Cmd+Shift+4, then press Space and click the QuickTime window to capture the entire Apple TV display
- Cmd+Shift+4 and drag to select a specific area of the Apple TV screen
- Cmd+Shift+5 to open the Screenshot toolbar and choose your preferred capture method
Hold Option when clicking the QuickTime window (in the Cmd+Shift+4+Space method) to capture without the window shadow — this gives you a cleaner image.
LazyScreenshots annotates and beautifies your Apple TV captures — add device frames, backgrounds, and callouts in one step.
Try LazyScreenshots FreeMethod 2: Screenshot Apple TV with Xcode
Xcode captures Apple TV screenshots at the native output resolution and saves them directly as image files — no macOS screenshot shortcut needed.
Step 1: Install Xcode and pair
- Download Xcode from the Mac App Store (it’s free but large — about 12 GB)
- Open Xcode and go to Window > Devices and Simulators
- Make sure your Apple TV is turned on and on the same Wi-Fi network
- Your Apple TV should appear in the left sidebar — click it
- If prompted, enter the pairing code displayed on your Apple TV
Step 2: Take the screenshot
- With your Apple TV selected in the Devices window, navigate to the screen you want on the Apple TV
- Click Take Screenshot in Xcode’s device panel
- Xcode saves the screenshot to your Desktop as a PNG
Xcode captures at the Apple TV’s full output resolution. If your Apple TV 4K is set to 4K output, you get a 3840×2160 pixel image. This is higher quality than capturing the QuickTime window, which may be scaled down to fit your Mac’s display.
When to use Xcode over QuickTime
| Feature | QuickTime | Xcode |
|---|---|---|
| Setup complexity | Quick (already installed) | Requires 12 GB download |
| Screenshot resolution | Limited by QuickTime window size | Full native resolution (up to 4K) |
| Direct save to file | No (use macOS screenshot shortcuts) | Yes (one-click save to Desktop) |
| Screen recording | Yes | No (screenshots only) |
| Best for | Quick captures and video | High-res screenshots for documentation |
Apple TV screenshot resolutions by model
The resolution of your Apple TV screenshot depends on the model and your display settings:
| Apple TV model | Max output | Screenshot resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV HD (4th gen, 2015) | 1080p | 1920 × 1080 px |
| Apple TV 4K (1st gen, 2017) | 4K SDR/HDR | 3840 × 2160 px |
| Apple TV 4K (2nd gen, 2021) | 4K HDR, Dolby Vision | 3840 × 2160 px |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 2022) | 4K HDR, Dolby Vision | 3840 × 2160 px |
To check or change your Apple TV’s output resolution, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Format on the Apple TV. Higher resolutions produce sharper screenshots but larger file sizes.
Why DRM content shows a black screen
If you try to screenshot Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or other streaming services, the captured image will be entirely black. This is by design — these apps use HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) that prevents any screen capture.
Content you can screenshot without issues:
- The tvOS home screen and app grid
- Settings and system menus
- Apple Arcade games and other non-DRM games
- Fitness+ workout summaries (though the video itself may be blocked)
- Photos and home screen customizations
- Third-party apps that don’t implement DRM
There is no workaround for DRM-protected content. Any tool or method — QuickTime, Xcode, or third-party capture software — will show a black screen for protected streams.
Troubleshooting Apple TV screenshot problems
Apple TV doesn’t appear in QuickTime or Xcode
- Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network (check Settings > Network on Apple TV and System Settings > Wi-Fi on Mac)
- Make sure your Apple TV is awake — press any button on the Siri Remote
- Restart both your Mac and Apple TV
- On Apple TV, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote App and Devices and make sure pairing is enabled
- Check that your Mac’s firewall isn’t blocking the connection (System Settings > Network > Firewall)
Screenshot is black or blank
- If the entire screenshot is black, you’re likely capturing DRM-protected content (see above)
- If the QuickTime window shows your Apple TV but the screenshot is blank, try capturing with Cmd+Shift+4 (drag selection) instead of window capture
- In Xcode, make sure the Apple TV is not in sleep mode when you click Take Screenshot
Low resolution or blurry screenshots
- In QuickTime, the preview window may be scaled down. Resize the QuickTime window larger before capturing, or use Xcode for native-resolution screenshots
- Check that your Apple TV is set to its highest resolution: Settings > Video and Audio > Format
- A weak Wi-Fi connection can reduce streaming quality to QuickTime — move your Mac closer to your router or use a 5 GHz network
Quick reference: Apple TV screenshot methods
| Method | Resolution | Setup required |
|---|---|---|
| QuickTime + macOS screenshot shortcuts | Depends on window size | None (QuickTime is pre-installed) |
| Xcode Devices > Take Screenshot | Full native (up to 4K) | Install Xcode (~12 GB) |
