What Reddit Loves

"The old Skitch was perfect. Simple annotations — arrows, text, shapes — that just worked. It was the gold standard for quick markup."
r/macapps · 2023
"Dead simple to use. My non-technical coworkers could figure out Skitch in 30 seconds. You can't say that about most screenshot tools."
r/Evernote · 2024
"Free and available on the App Store. It has its limits, but for basic annotation work it still gets the job done without costing anything."

What Reddit Doesn't Love

"Skitch feels abandoned. Evernote clearly stopped caring about it years ago. It barely gets updates and the interface looks ancient."
r/macapps · 2024
"It's tied to Evernote and that's a dealbreaker. I don't want to sign into an Evernote account just to annotate screenshots."
r/mac · 2024
"No scrolling capture, no OCR, no screen recording. The feature set is frozen in 2016. There are free tools that do way more now."
r/macapps · 2025
"Every Skitch thread becomes a eulogy. People remember how good the standalone version was and lament what Evernote did to it."

If these pain points resonate...

Miss the old Skitch simplicity but need modern features? LazyScreenshots gives you quick annotations and auto-paste into Claude and Cursor — without Evernote baggage. $29 one-time.

Get LazyScreenshots — $29
Skitch still works for basic annotations — arrows, text, and shapes on screenshots. But it hasn't received meaningful updates in years and the Evernote integration feels forced. Reddit consensus: if you're starting fresh, choose Shottr (free) or LazyScreenshots ($29) instead. Skitch is mostly recommended for existing Evernote users who already know it.
Skitch was originally an independent app that Evernote acquired in 2011. Evernote rebuilt it as an Evernote companion tool, removing some standalone features and tying it to Evernote's ecosystem. Development has been minimal since, and Reddit users widely consider it effectively abandoned.
For the same easy annotation experience, Reddit recommends Shottr (free) or CleanShot X (paid). Both have better annotation tools than Skitch, are actively developed, and don't require an Evernote account. LazyScreenshots adds AI auto-paste on top if you work with Claude or Cursor.
You can use Skitch's basic features without an Evernote account, but the app is deeply integrated with Evernote and many sharing features require signing in. This Evernote dependency is one of the most common complaints on Reddit.
